Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Film Review

Sunday, September 28, 2014

First things first, have you seen this film yet? If you haven't, go see it. Now.

This has got to be by far my favourite film release this year with its fun-loving characters, gripping storyline, incredible special effects and a soundtrack that I simply cannot stop listening to.

If you've come to read some review from a comic-book fanatic that will most likely go in to lots of depth and/or rip the movie to shreds, then I'm afraid you're out of luck; I am not a comic book kinda gal. This review is coming from someone who loves movies, loves sci-fi and enjoys Marvel superhero films; I don't know whether it follows the comics well or whether something was incorrect, this is just my honest and open thoughts on it.

So, the storyline. Without giving too much away, we basically follow 5 "criminals" on a quest to save the universe from the bad guys and to do so lots of action, adventure, laughter, tears, mischief and all that ensues. The storyline isn't bad but apart from having the out-laws as the good guys, the plot is pretty much like any typical superhero film. What makes this one such a joy to watch though is that it is so much fun. Sure, it has it's heart wrenching moments - OK, I cried. Twice. - but to be honest, it's not a film to be taken too seriously.

The good guys! L-R: Gamora, Peter Quill (a.k.a. Starlord), Rocket Raccoon, Drax the Destroyer, Groot

The baddies! Top: Ronan the Accuser, Bottom: Thanos

The characters are awesome. The main characters are all played splendidly, even Groot with his one line of "I am Groot". Each of them stole the show for different reasons and made for a great cast. I mean, how can a tree-like creature actually be cute? I don't know how they did it but he is, especially the dancing bit! And since when did Andy from Parks & Recreation become such a hottie (I totally swooned at the topless scene, see picture below - you're welcome)! Not only has Chris Pratt buffed up, he's shown even more of his potential and I, for one, can't wait to see more of his work. The secondary characters became strongly involved too and it was good to feel like you got to know them. There's also so much fab banter between the characters which, again, makes the whole film funny and easy to watch.

Kudos must go to the designers and makers of the film as they did a stand up job on the special effects; they are flippin' fantastic! Especially when it comes to Rocket and Groot, they look so real! Take a gander at the following images and decide for yourself (and they're not even half of it!).

I can't write the review without further mentioning the soundtrack. It's one of the best soundtracks to a film that I've heard in a long time, so much so that I downloaded it as soon as I got home from the cinema. It's excellent and fits the film perfectly. And try getting "Ooga-Chaka Ooga-Ooga, Ooga-Chaka Ooga-Ooga...I can't stop this feeling, deep inside on me..." out of your head, it's been stuck in mine for a good couple of weeks now!

From start to finish, I was completely hooked and on an emotional roller coaster. It really is an ace film and I implore you to grab some popcorn, get comfy and watch it as soon as you can. It's worth it!
