Change4Life Couch to 5K: Week 1

Thursday, September 04, 2014

Yes, that's right, you read that I am going to be doing the Couch to 5K program. In fact, I have just completed my first week - go me!

Those who know me will be thinking to themselves that this is completely unlike 'me'; I am not a fitness junkie nor have I ever been. I did have a spat last year where I started going to the gym, but after an on-going back problem, I stopped and never found the motivation to go back. But alas! The motivation is back on board and I'm excited for the coming weeks!

Before I go on any further, I'd like to say that I am not running to lose weight or anything like that. I am doing it to become healthier, fitter and to simply better myself, because at the end of the day, if you don't love who you are and what you do, then you can never be fully content in life - in my opinion anyway!

The motivation to get fighting fit started after my mom's other half, Nick, and some of his buddies completed the 5K (which turned in to a 9K after some course changes) Suffering Race. They did brilliantly and we all had a great day but seeing them finish the race and be so proud of themselves made me realise that I wanted to accomplish something like that.

After deciding to make a change, off I popped to the local fitness shop and picked myself up some decent running trainers, some skinny capris and a sports bra (gotta keep the pups feeling comfortable, haven't we ladies!). I then downloaded the Change4Life 'Couch to 5K' app and sorted out a music playlist to run to (a must have for all runners!) and I was ready to go.

I am pleased to say that I made it through week one alive! Yipee!! The first week was three 30min programs which consisted of a brisk 5min warm up walk, followed by 1min run, then 90secs walking and so on for 20mins until you do another brisk 5min walk to cool down. In total, you run for 8mins! For a first time runner like moi, doing it all was a big achievement.

I'll keep you updated as I go along but the app is a 9-week course so let's see how I do! To find out more about the program and app, click here.

Do you run or do any fitness? Have you given the Change4Life app a go?
