Night-time Newbies

Wednesday, January 28, 2015

Have you ever had that moment where a bottle of your daily product coughs and sputters out it's last drop and you have a realisation that there is nothing to replace it with? Well, this happened to me not too long ago when I was doing my night-time routine and not one, but three products became empty.

So after the initial panic, I went in to town the next day and headed for Superdrug. After locating the B. Pure Micellar Water and Simple Conditioning Eye Makeup Remover that I had been using previously, I noticed a 'buy one, get one free offer' in the same aisle. On the lookout to save a bit of money since starting my New Year's Resolution (see more on that here), I decided to take a closer look.

The offer was focusing on Nivea products and low and behold, on the shelf sat a Sensitive 3 in 1 Micellar Cleansing Water and Double Effect Eye Makeup Remover. With the duo's offer costing me only £4.09 (the price of my usual two would have amounted to £8.98), it seemed too good an opportunity to miss and straight to the till I went. It was a purely impulse buy, but it seemed worth the risk.

Since finding the world of micellar water, I have noticed a vast improvement in the appearance of my skin. I'll admit, I'm still forever in a war zone with acne and despite being on medication for it, those nasty blighters pop up regularly but since making - and sticking to - a proper skincare routine, the condition of my skin has been getting a lot better.

After using Nivea's 3 in 1 Micellar Cleansing Water for a few weeks now, I am happy to report that it's brilliant! I've yet to try Bioderma's (due to the steep price tag) but after using this one, I'm not sure why I would want to. My face feels and looks in better condition and I've even noticed a slight decrease in spots - a massive plus. It's fragrance free, suitable for sensitive skin (which, due to the acne meds, mine now is), doesn't require any rinsing off and can even be used to remove eye makeup. I apply to a cotton wool pad, wipe around my face and it removes most of the daily makeup and grime. I'd say, it removes even more than the B. Pure one did and considering it's slightly cheaper too, I think I'll be heading straight for the Nivea section next time.

Although the Micellar Water can take off eye makeup too, my eyes and the area around them have become extra sensitive after a few months of having 'on and off' conjunctivitis and thus I like to use a separate product for them. I also wear a lot of waterproof mascara, which can be extra stubborn to remove, therefore Nivea's Double Effect Eye Makeup Remover seemed the next best item to try.

This product has two layers: an oil layer that helps remove the eye makeup and an aqueous layer to protect and care for the lashes. After shaking the bottle vigorously and mixing them together, I apply a small amount to a cotton wool pad and wipe away. I have been amazed at how quickly and efficiently this stuff is at removing the makeup, including the waterproof wonders, and it's still mild enough to not stress out my sensitive eyes. The surrounding skin has also been appearing brighter and been feeling more moisturised - a huge help when applying concealer for my under-eye baggies. There is also no oily residue left behind and the area feels utterly awake and clean after use. Again, I will definitely be picking up another when the time comes.

The last item that ran out on, what I referred to as, "skincare's almost doomsday" was the Simple Toner. Not everyone likes a toner in their routine but I find it helps to take the last bits of product off my face that a cleanser won't and makes my face feel a little fresher before I head to the land of nod. Remembering that I had a bottle of Dr. Jart+ Pore Refine Tight Effect Toner in the cupboard from when I received it in Birchbox's November box, I decided to give do a test run.

Dr. Jart+ was not a brand that I had heard of prior to receiving the product but after it was in my possession, I checked out some reviews and it looked promising. I gave the Toner a go back in November but as my routine didn't call for it at the time, I didn't get to try it properly. After using it for a few weeks, I have fallen in love with it. I spray a little on to a cotton wool pad, then wipe around my face and it gives that extra clean feeling, as well as, making my face feel firmer, smoother and fresher (again!). I've also found that despite using it for a few weeks, the bottle looks hardly touched which is another bonus as it RRP's at £15.95. Another amazing product that now features in my daily routine.

I am really enjoying the new additions to my nightly routine and unless I see another 'too good to miss' offer, I imagine I'll be sticking with this daily set-up for a while!

Have you tried any of these products before? What's your night-time skincare routine?
